LEARNING: UC online, REEd goes global, ΢Ƶ Extension

The UC Office of the President is reminding students around the system of the opportunity to enroll in online courses originating on other UC campuses.

Also, the School of Education’s Resourcing Excellence in Education, or REEd, is collaborating with Stanford University to present a free, massive open online course, “Seven Essential Practices for Developing Academic Oral Language and Literacy in Every Subject,” More than 3,000 people are enrolled worldwide.

And ΢Ƶ Education invites Sacramento-area working professionals to free information sessions on opportunities for continuing education in six high-demand fields.

• UC online – Sixteen online courses originating from across the UC system are available to UC students in spring quarter through the . These are online UC courses developed and taught by UC faculty and instructors. All courses will earn UC unit credit, with the potential for general education, premajor or major credit based on the student’s departmental and programmatic requirements.

΢Ƶ students may be interested in these courses from other campuses: “Air Pollution,” “Art, Science and Technology,” “Diversity, Disagreement and Democracy” and “Geographic Information Systems” (Los Angeles); “Calculus 19A” and “Calculus “19B” and “Introduction to Fresh Water” (Santa Cruz); “Computer Science I” and “Introduction to Latin America” (Riverside); “Maps and Spatial Reasoning” (Santa Barbara); “Public Rhetoric and Practical Communication” (San Diego); and “Principles in the Social Sciences” and writing and Rhetoric” (Irvine).

΢Ƶ offers three online courses for cross-campus enrollment: “Global Climate Change,” “Terrorism and War” and “Expository Writing.”

• REEd goes global — Resourcing Excellence in Education and  the Stanford Graduate School of Education’s are partners on the a five-session course that runs through mid-June.

Susan O’Hara, executive director of REEd, said “teachers and coaches from across the U.S. and from 10 countries (including France, England, Hong Kong, Sweden, South Korea, Russia, Egypt and Canada) have come together to learn about and implement instructional practices for meeting the needs of diverse learners.”

Participants are taking a close look at the development of “language for content and content for language,” according to the course description. The massive open online course, or MOOC, “organizes a massive collaboration of educators who wish to support students, particularly English language learners, in developing their abilities to use complex language.”

REEd is the new name of the Center for Collaborative Research and Extension Services for Schools, or CRESS, founded 25 years ago to put educational research into practice and to improve K-12 teaching and learning.

• ΢Ƶ Extension — Free information sessions are scheduled in March and April for people wishing to explore opportunities for continuing education in six high-demand fields and industries.

“Industry-specific sessions let attendees explore the job prospects in each field, meet program representatives and instructors, and learn how a certificate from can advance their careers,” ΢Ƶ Extension representatives said.

Four sessions will be in-person at ΢Ƶ Extension in Sacramento, Sutter Square Galleria, 2901 K St. Free parking will be provided.

One session will be conducted by webinar and another is a video, available for on-demand viewing.

  • Web Development — 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17
  • Health Informatics and Healthcare Analytics — 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, March 18 (webinar)
  • Human Resources Development and Management — 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18
  • Equine Event Management — online, available for viewing, on demand, April 6-June 7
