NEWS BRIEFS: Pepsi deal to bring $10 million to university

There will be a different flavor to the ΢Ƶ campus this fall: Pepsi.

The university will begin selling Pepsi products after signing a letter of intent for a 10-year agreement that will bring the campus nearly $10 million in support for students.

Pepsi plans to have its products in place before freshmen move into residence halls at the end of September.

When final, the agreement will give Pepsi Beverages Co. near-exclusive rights to sell, advertise and promote its soft drinks and other products in campus dining commons, athletic concessions, catering, cafeterias and retail stores. The ΢Ƶ Health System has a contract with Pepsi that expires in October 2015, after which the health system will become part of the new agreement.

Snyder pleads no contest to weapons, explosives charges

A sentencing hearing for David Snyder is set for Oct. 17 after the former ΢Ƶ chemist pleaded no contest on Sept. 12 to all 17 counts against him in connection with an explosion in his campus apartment in January 2013.

The case was referred to the Probation Department for a presentencing report, and the hearing will be held in Yolo County Superior Court in Woodland.

The laboratory and hazardous chemicals in his Russell Park apartment became known on Jan. 17, 2013, after Snyder sought hospital treatment for a hand injury caused by a small explosion.

The district attorney's office filed a complaint that included weapons and explosives charges, and Snyder had been scheduled to go on trial Oct. 20.

Snyder, who received bachelor's and doctoral degrees in chemistry from ΢Ƶ, had been hired for two months as a junior specialist at ΢Ƶ. Immediately after his arrest, Snyder was put on investigatory leave. His employment with ΢Ƶ ended on Jan. 31, 2013.

'One ΢Ƶ' poster calendars now on sale

There’s only and only one official campus poster calendar — and it's on sale now at three ΢Ƶ Stores locations: Memorial Union, Welcome Center and Downtown Store.

The 2014-15 calendar ties itself to the “One” campaign in a unique way — by using photos of iconic objects around the campus to spell out “ONE.” The “O” is a bike wheel, naturally; the “N” is really natural, as in trees; and the “E” is formed by exterior angles and shadows of the Social Sciences and Humanities Building.

The calendars are $1.89 each and are eligible for the 10 percent departmental discount if purchased with a department recharge account or a purchasing card.

The Aug. 26-27 drive on the Quad brought in 345 pints of blood. Roper said 454 people — including 112 first-timers — turned out for the blood drive (not everyone is able to complete the donation process).
