Theater-dance and music to stage Oklahoma! as ΢²ªÊÓƵ Centennial event

The Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music announced a joint production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! as a special event in May 2009 during the ΢²ªÊÓƵ Centennial.

Five performances are scheduled in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, with music by the ΢²ªÊÓƵ Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Moschler, master of arts candidate in conducting.

Oklahoma! -- a simple tale of cowhands and farmers finding love and community in the Oklahoma territory -- opened on Broadway in 1943 and ran for a then-unprecedented 2,212 performances, later enjoying revivals, national tours and an Academy Award-winning 1955 film adaptation. Rodgers and Hammerstein received a Pulitzer Prize for Oklahoma! in 1944.

Performance times and dates: 8 p.m. Saturday, May 2, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3; 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, May 8-9; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 10.
