Being a Hispanic/Latinx-identifying student at one of the largest UCs has opened my eyes to the limitations we as a community face. ΢��Ƶ being on the map as a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution means more diversity on our campus and support for students where their concerns are heard. ΢��Ƶ becoming an HSI would help create a bridge to close the gap between low-income people of color and higher education.

The University of California, Davis, received more than $1 million in grants from the National Science Foundation to convene and engage faculty, researchers and industry experts in expanding research and undergraduate instruction at Hispanic Serving Institutions and Minority Serving Institutions, or HSIs and MSIs. The grants focus on computing fields identified as national priorities by the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The Graduate School of Management received the grants.

“Join us for an afternoon of panels featuring scholars and experts speaking on topics related to what it might mean for ΢��Ƶ to be Hispanic-serving — from defining the metrics to rethinking the classroom,” the organizers said.

The University of California, Davis, has fully embraced its journey toward achieving Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) designation.

Students from historically underrepresented groups — African American, Native American and Chicano/Latino — represented 32.6 percent of both the entering class and all undergraduates who are residents of the United States.

Chancellor Gary S. May is pleased to announce that ΢��Ƶ has met the requirements to be eligible for Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) designation status. Being HSI eligible, as defined by the federal government, means that the student population has enrolled 25 percent of its domestic undergraduate students from economically disadvantaged populations.
