The Greatest Fundraising Year in ΢��Ƶ History

Donors continue to bring nothing but good news to the University of California, Davis, setting giving records to achieve greater impact during a challenging and tragic year. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the university raised a historic amount in the last fiscal year: a record $269.4 million from 36,016 donors, with an all-time high of 63,650 gifts and pledges.

Art Patrons Create New Exhibitions Endowment at Manetti Shrem Museum

The art scene at the University of California, Davis, just got even better.

In their first major commitment to ΢��Ƶ, philanthropists Kellie and Jeff Hepper ’79 have pledged $1 million to create the Hepper Family Exhibition Fund, an endowed gift to support the core exhibition work of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.

Alumni Couple Establish Endowed Chair, ΢��Ƶ’ 1st in African American Studies

Alumni and longtime university supporters Lois and Darryl Goss are creating a presidential chair in African American and African studies at the University of California, Davis, to provide sustained funding for teaching, research and outreach about the history and culture of communities of African descent around the world.

Want to support STEM education for girls? Help build a Mars rover? “Be a Gator Donator” and help buy a John Deere Gator to facilitate student research at the university’s Quail Ridge natural reserve?

These are among the dozen projects offered by student, faculty and staff teams participating in Crowdfund ΢��Ƶ, a new fundraising effort from the Annual and Special Gifts Program in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

When civil engineering student Tadewos Getachew ’19 was a little boy, he witnessed resource scarcity firsthand in Ethiopia. Now, he is able to pursue his dream to study water resources and solar energy at the University of California, Davis, in large part due to the AvenueE program, which is funded by philanthropy. The program provides engineering and computer science students with funding and a smooth transition from California community colleges to ΢��Ƶ.

Longtime ΢��Ƶ Supporters Receive Charles J. Soderquist Award

The ΢��Ƶ Foundation has recognized John and Lesli Chuck ’84 with the prestigious 2018 Charles J. Soderquist Award. The annual award is presented to individuals who demonstrate excellence in philanthropy, volunteerism and leadership, and an overall commitment to the University of California, Davis.

John completed his medical residency at ΢��Ƶ and has been a family physician with The Permanente Medical Group for 28 years. Lesli graduated from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, as did their daughter Kelly earlier this year.

΢��Ƶ Announces Another Record-Breaking Fundraising Year

After 15 years in the automotive industry, including a career customizing hot rods, Joe Williams ’14 came to the University of California, Davis, to study brewing, then stayed on as a staff researcher. Now, Williams is ΢��Ƶ’ first endowed brewer, thanks to a $2 million gift from Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and his wife, Katie Gonser.

Bruce Edwards, Bill Chancellor Honored With ΢��Ƶ Medal

Alumnus and businessman Bruce Edwards of Saratoga, and the late William J. “Bill” Chancellor, professor emeritus of biological and agricultural engineering, have been honored with the ΢��Ƶ Medal, the highest honor the university presents to an individual.

Interim Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter presented Edwards’ medal at a gala event in his honor on June 13. Chancellor’s wife of 56 years, Nongkarn Chancellor, is accepting the medal on his behalf at the College of Engineering’s commencement today (June 16).

Foster Receives Charles J. Soderquist Award

The ΢��Ƶ Foundation has recognized Ron Foster with the prestigious 2017 Charles J. Soderquist Award. The annual award is presented to individuals who demonstrate excellence in philanthropy, volunteerism and leadership, and an overall commitment to ΢��Ƶ.

Foster is an owner and board member of Livingston, Calif.-based Foster Farms, where he served as president and chief executive officer for more than 12 years. He has been a strong champion for the university, particularly in the Central Valley of California and in the poultry industry.
