Setting Up Course Reserves in Canvas

The ΢��Ƶ Library is holding a series of drop-in sessions to acquaint instructors with the relatively new process of setting up course reserves in ΢��Ƶ Canvas, the campus’s online learning management system.

NEWS BRIEFS: Dean Dillard Gains New Term on State Ag Board

Gov. Jerry Brown last week reappointed Dean Helene Dillard to the California State Board of Food and Agriculture. Dillard, a ΢��Ƶ alumna, has led the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences since 2014.

Brown appointed her to the food and agriculture board in 2015; her new term runs until January 2020. The 15-member panel, representing a broad spectrum of California agriculture, serves in an advisory capacity to the governor and the secretary of the state Department of Food and Agriculture.

Forums are scheduled next week on two projects integral to ΢��Ƶ academics: our library of the future; and the campus’s new learning management system, Canvas.

The library will hold a pair of community fair-style town halls on Thursday, Dec. 1, for the unveiling of a draft vision of how the library’s physical spaces can support services and resources that best meet the needs of faculty, researchers and students in the 21st century.

Preliminary answers will begin to emerge in the draft, which synthesizes many months of research and campus input.

Roughly 1,600 people attended the Science Friday radio show at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts last weekend, and soon the whole world can hear a recording of the show.

΢��Ƶ scientists are featured in the episode titled “Life Without Water,” to be presented on Capital Public Radio (90.5 FM) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. this Friday (Sept. 30). Ira Flatow’s show also plays on more than 375 other National Public Radio-affiliated stations.

Turning Technology into ‘Teach-nology’

A daylong institute for instructors offers them the opportunity to get up to speed on what Andy Jones describes as "new and important 'teach-nologies' — tools and applications that we can use to help our students reach their learning objectives in our classes.”

Jones is a lecturer in the University Writing Program and the academic associate director of Academic Technology Services, which puts on the annual Summer Institute on Teaching With Technology. ATS is a unit of Information and Educational Technology.

Academic Technology Services announced a half day of workshops this Thursday (June 16) to introduce instructors to the campus’s new learning management system, ΢��Ƶ Canvas.

UPDATED: SmartSite Remains Offline

Update 1:30 p.m. May 23 from IET's TechNews:

Scriba, which hosts the SmartSite learning management system for ΢��Ƶ, missed its deadline of restoring the service by 11 a.m. today after taking it offline late on May 20 for emergency maintenance.

As of 1:30 p.m. today, Scriba had not said when it expects SmartSite to be restored. ΢��Ƶ is pressing the company for answers, including when it will implement its backup restoration plans if the outage continues.
