Yellow Ribbons Bring Message of Support

Yellow ribbons have returned to the Quad, signaling the university’s support for veterans and Veterans Day (Nov. 11).

Some 15 people gathered yesterday (Nov. 6) for a campus tradition that is more than a decade old — tying yellow ribbons around nearly every tree on the Quad.

Ribbons and Events Show Support for Veterans

΢��Ƶ is continuing to show its support for the growing community of veterans on campus.

This morning (Nov. 4), 18 people volunteered to tie yellow ribbons around the 100-plus trees of the Quad in the traditional symbol of Veterans Day remembrance — an increase over last year’s volunteer numbers.

Three students have moved into a lab of sorts on campus — not one with beakers and test tubes, but one with radiant-heat flooring and automatic shutters.

The Honda Smart Home, a zero-net-energy residence in ΢��Ƶ West Village, allows researchers from Honda, ΢��Ƶ and PG&E to test out new energy-efficient technology. Meet its new residents and learn about the home in the above video.

VETERANS WEEK: Yellow-Ribbon Tying Open to All

For six years we’ve arrived on campus the week of Veterans Day to see all of the 100-plus trees on the Quad adorned with yellow ribbons, put there by our veterans — students and staff members.

Three dozen butterflies — symbols of new life — were recently released during a tribute to those who gave life to others.

Hosted annually by ΢��Ƶ Transplant Center and Sierra Donor Services, the ceremony recognizes the generosity of ΢��Ƶ Medical Center patients who became organ and tissue donors. Because of them and others like them, 1,200 people in the Sacramento region received lifesaving transplants last year.

Campus Salutes Veterans

The Davis campus is honoring its military veterans at a reception this afternoon (Nov. 9) and with a yellow-ribbon display on the Quad through Veterans Day this Friday (Nov. 11) and lasting through the weekend.

Today’s reception, for staff, faculty and student veterans, is scheduled from 4:45 to 6 p.m. in the Aspen Room at the Shared Services Center, 260 Cousteau Place, Suite 150 (free parking). Light refreshments will be served; no RSVPs required,
