Aerosols carried in wildfire smoke plumes that are hundreds of hours old can still affect climate, according to a study out of the University of California, Davis.

The research, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, suggests that wildfire emissions even 10 days old can affect the properties of aerosols — suspended liquid or particles that are key to cloud formation.

΢��Ƶ took unprecedented action to suspend normal operations for several days last November due to heavy smoke from the Camp Fire that tore through the town of Paradise in Butte County.

In response, campus officials have not only developed guidance for smoke emergencies but for power outages that may or may not be tied to wildfires, as well as a policy on campus operating status, authorizing the chancellor to reduce or suspend services and close facilities as needed.
