UPDATED: Longer Detour Around Ramp Work at Hutchison and 113

Updated 7 p.m. March 24: The new cycle track will not open, as previously announced, when construction switches from the north to the south side of the Hutchison Drive overpass. Instead, bike lanes going each direction will be provided for continued bicycle travel across the overpass. In addition, the switch to the south side is now scheduled for the week of March 28. The story below has been revised to reflect these changes.

New Sidewalks and Bike Lanes Coming to West Village-Campus Corridor

΢��Ƶ is building comfort, convenience and sustainability into the Hutchison Drive commute path between ΢��Ƶ West Village and the central campus.

The project centered on the Hutchison overpass at Highway 113 calls for new sidewalks, a bike path running east on the south side of Hutchison and a 14-foot-wide two-way cycle track on the north side of Hutchison. What is a cycle track? See box below.

Big Shift Toward Carbon-Neutral Future

The ΢��Ƶ Big Shift hot water conversion project will shift the energy source we use to heat many of our buildings from natural gas (using steam) to electricity (using hot water), reducing the university’s reliance on fossil fuels while immediately decreasing energy and water use — significant steps toward meeting the goal set by the UC Board of Regents for each campus to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2025.

Groundbreaking Set for Classroom Building

The gold shovels are coming out for the Teaching and Learning Complex, which will provide classroom space in the campus core for approximately 2,000 students.

The four-story building will occupy the Surge IV site — to be cleared of its collection of old portable buildings — and extend into the parking lot between Surge IV and the Silo.

The shoveling will take place during the official groundbreaking Thursday, Oct. 31. The program, including a reception, is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. The campus community is invited.
