During a web presentation about the Panamanian rainforest, children from a fourth-grade class in New York City asked University of California, Davis, sophomore Brianna Pinto if she’d ever seen the Panama Canal. She turned her laptop camera to her office window to show a cargo ship on the canal.

“All of the kids yelled in awe, expressing exactly how I felt every time I walked outside here,” said the wildlife, fish and conservation biology major.

Update 5:30 p.m. May 26: After the news release below was published, Courtney Jallo of Davis became the latest of six ΢��Ƶ students and graduates to be awarded a grant under the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Both an alumna and employee of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, she plans to research land management practices and agroforestry important to the Kandy area of Sri Lanka.

'By Philanthropy' Campaign Answers the Question: How Are Donations Used?

She was honored by her colleagues, students and administrators with plaudits, speeches and a specially decorated cake — a cake-and-frosting stack of books with titles used in her class.
