Updated 8 p.m. Feb. 3: Professor Art Shapiro officially closed his Beer for a Butterfly contest tonight without a winner for the first time in the contest’s 49-year history. For the “complicated” reasons explained below, he had extended the contest until 5 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 2), then again to 5 p.m. today — but no one brought in a cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae). Beer for a Butterfly Contest Continues in 2020

The start of a new year can mean only one thing: no, not champagne and confetti — a hunt for butterflies.

For nearly five decades, Professor Art Shapiro has sponsored a contest to find the first cabbage white butterfly of the new year in Sacramento, Solano or Yolo counties, with a pitcher of beer up for grabs if anyone finds a Pieris rapae before he does (he’s been beaten only a handful of times).

Art Shapiro’s annual Beer for a Butterfly contest is over, and he has again netted the first cabbage white butterfly in the region and will be treating himself to a beer.

He made the find last Friday (Jan. 25) in Suisun City, recording the fourth-earliest flight in that city of a Pieris rapae — which needs a string of warm days to take flight — in his almost five decades of studying of biological responses to climate change.
