“During a disaster is not the time to exchange business cards,” goes an old saying in emergency services, and no one takes that to heart more than ΢��Ƶ' new campus emergency manager, Benton Best. He took up his post in October and since then has been forming relationships with departments across the campus — reviewing and preparing action plans with fire, police, ΢��Ƶ Health and more.

΢��Ƶ fire and police personnel will train for three days this week — starting today (Aug. 29) — on responding to an active shooter incident, to be staged in and around the unoccupied northeast wing of Haring Hall at the corner of Storer Mall and California Avenue.

Guidance Issued on Closures, Power Outages

΢��Ƶ took unprecedented action to suspend normal operations for several days last November due to heavy smoke from the Camp Fire that tore through the town of Paradise in Butte County.

In response, campus officials have not only developed guidance for smoke emergencies but for power outages that may or may not be tied to wildfires, as well as a policy on campus operating status, authorizing the chancellor to reduce or suspend services and close facilities as needed.
